The Benefits of Service-Aware General Practitioners
Familiarity with Veteran Health Conditions: Our GPs specialise in Veteran health, and have developed a strong understanding of the conditions and ailments that commonly affect Veterans, including successful therapies and treatment solutions. This can involve robust escalation options, should base line treatments prove ineffective. Veterans often experience multiple chronic conditions that require an understanding of innovative treatments to address.
Knowledge of the Medical System: The Veteran medical system is complex and can be difficult to navigate, if a GP does not have a detailed understanding of the many services and treatment options available to Veterans, particularly those with White and Gold Card status. Optimal Veteran healthcare is underpinned by a combination of services from public and private medical facilities and specialists, and supported via both DVA and Medicare funded avenues. Understanding this complex landscape is necessary to provide a timely, high quality, and clinically appropriate use of services. This can only be achieved if a GP understands how these facilities, clinicians, and government bodies interact.
Understanding the Psychological Impact of Service: Veterans are not like other patients. The experiences of a career in the Australian Defence Force and transitioning to civilian life creates a highly specific environment very different to that of the everyday Australian. Veteran GPs posses understanding and experience that allows them to develop clinically appropriate treatment plans highly bespoke to the needs of each individual veteran.
